I'm looking for an external hard disk to store a bootable backup of my system partition, and some of my user data. Top read speed of 50mbps is fine, It's not going to be booted regularly. Reliability > speed. USB 3 is not an option, at all, and that's really all my local stores sell.

Can anyone recommend if I should purchase a pre-assembled, or assemble using an enclosure?

Also, are hard drives purchased from an etailer (like Newegg) more likely to fail then drives purchased at a local retailer (like Best Buy)?

Thank you all!

USB3 is backward compatible with USB2 meaning you can plug a USB3 device in a USB2 port and run it at USB2 speed. However with that said the maximum speed of USB2 is around 30MB/s. If you want faster you need to use a different interface.

In the first 6 months or so of a drives life I say yes. I mean as a result of bad shipping you will see a higher % of infant mortality. However after that I am not so sure. Either way remember that for sata hard drives expected lifetime (of around 5 years) the expected annual failure rate should be around 2% to 8%.
