External Raid 1 Subsystem

I want to have a RAID 1 array attached externally to my computer.

That seems to be exactly what I need but it is $370 for a USB 2.0 or Firewire only and $470 for a combo USB 2.0 and Firewire.

It also seems chepaer to get a second computer for just RAID 1.

What advice do you have?
 
Fileservers work extremely well if you have more than one consumer for the information stored on them and have the network connectivity to back them up.
 
Any other thoughts or am I the only person whose considered something like this?
 
For that price I would throw together a nice bsd file server. Or linux as it would be a little easer to set up. I mean you can get a dell server with a celeron with a 40 gig drive and 128 ram for like under 400 with rebates. Add some ram and a cheap ide raid 1 card and 2 hds. It'd end up being a little more but not by much. You could run it for multipe systems and even use it to host anything elce.
