I have looked through and searched this forum and the networking and security forum, and have not been able to find the answers I am looking for. Hopefully this is a good place to post this.
Main Points:
Want to add a network storage device (stand alone ethernet, no usb or firewire)
Mainly for backing up of files (no plans for media center or content serving at this point)
Want to back up imported DV files (10-13MB files)
Not interested in using a spare computer to handle the duties
The most storage I can get for around $300
Would rather not have to load a driver on any machine for it to be recognized
Options as I see it:
1. NAS type units (such as WD's NetCenter, Maxtor's Shared Storage)
2. seperate enclosure and drive of my choosing
My question is which would be the better route based on what I want to do?
I'm guessing that I will probably get more for my money by getting an enclosure and putting in my own drive. My problem with that is that I have seen many enclosures (and even some of the 'stand alones') indicate that they use FAT as the file system. I want to make sure I will be able to store my greater than 4GB movie files on them. Does FAT negate that possibilty? Also what are some pros or cons of either setup?
I can find all the various hardware (although suggestions are welcome) but what I want to decide here is which is the better route to be pursuing. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
