External modem on Linux, can't up the speed

I have an old, before 2000, U.S. Robotics Sportster Faxmodem with X2 working under Ubuntu 4.10.

I'm aware that K56Flex won out over x2, and I may not be able to connect at 56K speeds, but I should at least be able to connect at either 28.8 or 33.6K speeds, right?

I'm only working at 14.4kbps now.

What can I do?
