external links and web browser

it seems that external links(say an http link received in an instant message or a link to a help page from some other program) will no longer launch my browser, nothing happens, it just stopped working

i did check my file extensions, and htm/html are set to open with firefox
i created a test html document and it opened fine

any clue?
