External HDD slowing/freezing system?

I recently got a 160GB HDD that I've place in an IDE to usb enclosure. However.... if it's plugged in when I boot up, the boot take FOREVER. And if I plug it in after the boot... windows seems to slow down immensley, and possibly lock up....

anyone have any idea what's going on?
