Depends a lot on the enclosure, but there isn't any fundamental reason why you should not.

i have an icybox, and quite a few times i have left it on all night by mistake
and my drive works perfectly ....still
however i do think that if you have an enclosure that doesnt "spin down" after a certain amount of time it will decrease the life of the disk.
in my oppinion as soon as you have finished with using the disk in the external enclosure switch it off streagh away, then there is no reason why it wont last you the full reccomended life if the disc.
