External HD Recovery?

I did a reeeeally stupid thing today... I was all set to reinstall Windows, and I forgot my external hard drive was plugged in. For some strange reason, it was read as a D: in the setup and my second internal HD was read as E:, but they're both the same size so I thought the D: was my second internal. Anyway, I deleted the partition on the D: and created a new, raw one. BUT, I didn't format it. My question is... is there ANY way at all to get my files back on my external HD? Everything on there is basically my life... My entire portfolio (stored nowhere else), important papers, and even just billions upon billions of pictures from many years ago.. If I lose that, I don't know what I'll do. So anyway, I'm frantically searching for a way to somehow recover these files on my external. I really hope it's possible, and I hope NOT formatting it will aid in the recovery... I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks!
