External HD recommendations. (for school)

I need to it be USB powered and to be reliable.

Do you have a laptop? If so, upgrade its HDD, and throw the old one into a Vantec 2.5" Nextar external enclosure.

Yep, that is a good option if you get a decent enclosure. If you want a complete kit, the WD Passport externals seem to be well liked.
