looking to backup large files from HD and possibly rip my DVD (300+) into a portable HD.
Pls recommend a reliable external HD.
USB ...no firewires or eSATA...unfortunately.

seagate 7200.10 (the 500g models are ~100 now) with an external enclosure of your choice (I like the vantec nextars for ~20). doing it manually will almost always result in a better price than the boxed deals, plus you'll have the ability to swap drives as you choose.

I agree with thrawn86. Just be sure the enclosure you buy supports the size of the drive you want.

Oh, and good luck on ripping your dvds to hd. I recently encoded 73 dvds into divx files at around a gig per movie. YAY! dual core, but it still took me over a month. I would do 1 or 2 after work every day, and 4 or 5 on Sat. and Sun. I found all sorts of ways to batch encode, but I still had to, run dvd decrypter, edit out the previews/credits, and swap dvds in/out of the drive.
Make backups, not just raid1 either, but a backup that is not kept on the same computer. That is a lot of work to have to do again if you should have a drive die, or catch a nasty virus, or have drive corruption, etc.

thanks guys

@GORANKAR I never ripped divx before, I've seen gamemovies but not hollywood movies.
Is it easy to do?

I've used R1p74m3, |)\/|)R1PP3R, |)\/|)5|-|R1|\||{
(sorry I have to...)
to my laptop so I can watch it in our breakroom---no tv.

My DVD rack is already bursting and hardly any room in our viewing room, so I just may place my collection in the basement---hardly the place to select movies.
But I figure if I place them in portable/external HD, I can just connect them to pc and watch it on our TV via S-video
All these are in theory...some ppl say build a HTTPC? But that seriously cuts in my gaming pc budget...not rich anymore ever since getting married---hint---

Also my problem with ripping movies is, its not the same without previews and special features...sometimes I watch the special features more than the actual movie. I guess I'm more of a movie fan than others.

I'll try to read up on DIVX GORANKAR. Sounds interesting.

Thanks again guys

sisterinlaw is asking: are Seagate Freeagent reliable? She's from a different state so I cannot help her, but she wants to transfer her "Charms" TV show from laptop to Freeagent.
She loves show too much to delete/remove from her laptop.

Are they reliable and easy to use?

thanks in advance
