External Harddrive Problems

I have a USB External Hard Drive, when I turn it on, sometimes the fan inside turns on and sometimes the fan does not. Anyway, when I plug the USB into my computer, the computer doesn't recognize the drive anymore (it worked for a good while).

There is a little LED light that lights up red when the drive starts up and eventually turns green but now all of a sudden it remains red and doesn't turn green.

Is it possible that the external storage device is dead or is my hard drive dead?
 
sounds like a dead drive. The best way to check is to disassemble the enclosure and pop it in your main pc if it's a 3.5" drive.

 
Argh, mine is having the same problems. Well, it WAS having the same problems. Now when I power it up I hear this ticking noise. Not good. I won't be able to confirm it's dead until I test it on my desktop which is on its way to Germany right now.

*waves bye to 200GB of backed up TV shows and drivers* :(
