External harddrive help

I'll be going to laptop-only in december, getting rid of my desktop, so I'm keen on the idea of using external's to back up the data that will be going from my desktop to my laptop (incase something happens to the laptop and such).

First, is there any feature to look for in external harddrives that really makes one better than the other, or will pretty much any external harddrive i get from outpost.com or something similiar work fine? It's probably a dumb question but I've never looked in to external harddrives before.

Also, are all external harddrives going to be fully pc and mac compatible? My laptop will be a mac but I'll probably need to occasionally hook the harddrives up to a pc, and I want to make sure there'll be no problem there.

Finally, is there any one external harddrive that's an especially good deal? I'm looking at getting two of them, between 80-150 gigs each.

Sorry if these are dumb questions.
