I'm not sure what to call it, but here is what I'm looking for....
I currently have a 4U Server with an ATX motherboard and about 5 hard drives. I've run out of room for expansion. I'd like to change out my server for something much smaller, and run the hard drives outside of it.
I'm looking for a device that will hold 8 or so hard drives, outside of a PC, with swappable cages, all connected with SATA, have its own power supply, and have some kind of big fat high-bandwidth cable that attaches to a PCIe card in a computer. So basically offload the SATA ports to an outside container but still have the bandwidth to handle it all. If those SATA ports can be seen natively (or easily with drivers) in Windows, even better.
This would allow me to build a server from a Mini-ITX board if a chose, and give the appearance of a "NAS" with all my hard drives next to it.
Does such an animal exist?
