I feel silly asking such a simple question, but the external hard drive I use for backing up my work PC's is dying. Am I able to strip it of the current hard drive and install my own? It's a Maxtor enclosure.

Move all the data from it and start on it with a screwdriver. Usually you can swap the drive but sometimes there can be driver/connectivity problems.

Thanks I will give it a shot. I thought it was bad because I had files on there that I could no longer access, but it'll still allowing me to copy 30-40 gig files onto it.

Is there a useful utility for testing hard drive integrity and reliability?
