External hard drive doesn't show up

Just bought a 250gb WD new from Newegg, using it with an old Nexstar NST-350u2 enclosure. I definately know the enclosure works as I JUST used it...

Hard drive is set to master (I tried cable select too). Everything plugged in-XP detected a USB mass storage device, did it's thing...but no hard drive popped up-there was nothing in both Computer Management and My Computer. How do I get it detected so I can format it and start using the drive?

BTW, the hard drive clicks for about 5 seconds when you first start the enclosure up, and then windows picks up the USB device, but not the hard drive...

Any clues?
 
have you tried formatting it while it is inside your computer and then putting it in the usb enclosure?

i have read several people with type of problem. a new drive in a usb enclosure and system not recognizing it. this seems to be the solution to the problem. hopefully, it works once more. ;)
