External Hard Disk for my laptop?

Hi everyone,

I am about to upgrade my lappy with additional storage. I am considering which one to choose, USB2.0 or IEEE1394 or maybe some PCMCIA card provide additional hard disk connector? I need the hard disk to perform very fast (due to some applications running on my PC require a lot of disk reads/writes.)

Can anyone tell me which one is the best choice? And if I choose USB2.0 external HDD, will USB 2.0 connection speed (480Mbps) will be the bottleneck for the performance?
