I just picked up a Plextor 8x dvd burner. Great little drive, but I'd like to put it in an external enclosure so I can use it on all of my machines. I also dont want it to be used for reading, to reduce wear and tear(right now its the only drive in my Shuttle, so i'd like to get it out of there).

I've been looking at external firewire and USB2 enclosures for it, but did a little browsing on the boards and it seems that hard drives suffer performance-wise when used with USB2. Is the same true of DVD burners? Whats this i hear about external SATA enclosures? Do they make them in 5.25" form? How much do they go for?

As an aside, my Shuttle only has USB2 and my laptop only has USB1 and firewire, so i'd like something with both USB2 and Firewire. the SATA is just a curiosity for now.

Thanks all for input.
