External drive

My computer recognizes my external HDD, but it doesn't appear in "My Computer", what's wrong?
 
when you say that I assume you mean that windows pops up that little baloon in the bottom right saying it's found new hardware. Is that correct?

and then if you click start and run, then type diskmgmt.msc does the drive show up in the list?

is this a whole new drive that you've attached? or something that you've reconnected that you've had for a while?
 
Is the drive formatted?

Check to see that Windows sees it, first in the device manager, then the disk manager. You may have to mount the disk to a drive letter (while my XP systems don't require drives to be mounted, my 03 box does)

It appears, but it is listed as "Unallocated"
