I currently have a laptop with an 80gig hard drive. My music collection is growing [30 gigs right now, on the rise] and will soon fill up what little space I have left on my computer. I also want to rip and convert my movie collection [about 50 movies currently] to my computer...my goal is to eliminate some of the need for carrying around dvd's. I know that music will stream well over usb 2.0, but how do movies do? I'm assuming they will work just fine, but I figured I ought to check.

With all that out of the way, I was thinking about picking up this drive after christmas [deals?]:

Will this suit my needs? Do any of you guys have this drive? Are there any issues with this drive that i don't know about? Thanks a ton.

I never had the My Book drives because they seem expensive seeing that you can make your own external with a drive and an enclosure. You can get encryption softwares free too. I like the WD passport extenbals better. I think the small drives made for lappies are better at absorbing the shocks. Plus the passport drives run off the power of the computer via USB. The other dives mean yet another power brick and cord. Best Buy this week has the WD 250 GB Passport on sale for 139.00. That's a steal since they are usually 159 on sale.

I currently carry a 1TB WD My Book. It is HUGE and it does have another powerbrick that I have to carry arround. I do have a lot of work related files to deal with plus music (120GB), movies (300GB), games (100GB).

I do like the idea of the passports. No additional clutter with extra powerbricks. I have thought about keeping the 1TB drive home and "packing" what I need for business trips. I don't need all of my movies and I could take just the movies I need for the week.

Extra storage is for the laptops is huge. My corporate laptop (which the external drive is used) only has 60GB of space. With the software that I have installed and the DB files I need to have ready access to, I only have about 25GB free.

The price mentioned above is great. It will pay for itself quickly enough.

I ended up snagging the 250GB white passport drive today at $70 off from circuit city. So far, so good. I've backed up my docs and relocated all my music to it. My current project is ripping and converting my dvd's to it for mobile use. It's pretty intense on all ends, and my computer and especially the hdd have been up to the task. right now i'd give this drive a 9/10 but I'll post more impressions after more use.

also, it should be noted that I am not planning to distribute my dvd's. I am only moving them to my drive to prevent the need to haul tons of discs with me when I travel.

I just received a Seagate FreeAgent 250GB external for xmas ... great drive, but for travel *stay away from it*

It has a mounted power base unit which functions as a stand for the vertically oriented drive. It ends up looking like an inverted "T" shape. This prevents it from being safely transported in a cloth laptop bag.

Otherwise, price / performance of the drive is good. It is whisper quiet and runs cool.

Cheers!
