External drive not working properly with eSata

I just recently bought an external drive for backups and wanted eSata for the speed. The drive is the Fantom GreenDrive Pro 2TB USB 2.0 / eSATA External Hard Drive GDP2000EU.

I'm having problems getting it working correctly, though. This is my first eSata device so I'm wondering if there is something simple that I'm doing wrong.

My case (Xaser VI) has two front eSata connectors whose cables I hooked up to the internal Sata ports (3/4 if it makes a difference) on my motherboard (P6x58D-E).

When I boot, the system will hang while detecting SataPort 3/4 (tried both with similar problems) for a random amount of time and then go into windows. In addition, I had to disable SMART monitoring for that port because initially it came up as BAD in bios.

Once in Windows, the drive will randomly appear/disappear in device manager and the system will periodically hang as well for a few seconds at a time. The HDD light flickers nearly continuously.

At any time, if I remove the eSata cable, the system returns to normal.

The drive itself works fine if I use the USB cable, it is only having problems with eSata.

I'm planning on trying another cable and/or getting a Sata/Esata bracket in case there is something wrong with either my cable or the wiring in the case itself, but I thought I'd post here as well in case there is something else I might be missing.

I have the latest BIOS for the motherboard and the latest Intel ICH10R drivers. The only other drives on the Intel side are a 50G Vertex LE (boot drive) and a DVD writer. I also have 2 1T WD drives on the Marvel controller.

Any tips/suggestions are appreciated.
