External drive "drops"

I have a WD 300gb external HDD that is connected via USB and is recognized in XP as the O drive. Every so often (like when I am transferring files to it) the connection to it is lost as if I physically unplugged it.

Anyone else experienced this issue? I have tried replacing the USB cable and the drive is powered and running.
 
Have you tried a different USB port?
Is this drive externally powered or powered by USB?
 
I've tried different cables and different ports. it is externally powered.
 
Have you tried it in another computer?
That would help pinpoint if it's the computer or drive causing the problem.

Does the power supply for the drive get hot?
Does the drop happen at specific time intervals (for example 5 minutes after plugging it in)
Does it drop when not transferring files?
Does Windows make the 'removed hardare' sound?
