External 520W PSU for Shuttle SFF

I've been playing with the thought of getting a nice black powerful PSU since i will be putting a more powerful CPU in my SS51G (2.8Ghz Prescott) and a new graphics card (6800GT). Can it easily be done? I don't care about having the thing dangle behind the case, I don't care much for aestetics. The old 200W internal would just be replaced.

Should work fine, right? ;)
 
That's not a bad idea. It would even help your temperatures since the PSU isn't in the case.

Most definitely. The PSU will be mounted on top of the black casing. And the lack of the 200W internal PSU would allow the cables to fit in nicely.
 
Yup, this has been done before with good results. If you want to do it clean you will need an ATX Power extender. Just mate it up to where the 40mm fan hole for the 200watt PSU currently resides. Removing the PSU also makes swapping out RAM or adding an intake fan a cake walk since it opens one side of the box up. Black or Mirror Finish Chrome would look real nice and keep the heat to a minimum.

That's what I was thinking. But then again, the price of those PSUs is pretty insane.
 
Since you'd be looking to go external, any "whisper" capable PSU should work. Its funny, but if you run a PSU outside of a case, it's noise level drops quite a bit. I think this mostly has to do with the fans spinning and vibrating or resonating the case chassis. Since your PSU setup won't be in a confined space, the noise will be marginal.

That is actually the idea. I wonder if newegg carries such an ATX Power extender.
 
I know that CablesNMor carry them for $5, so it should be easy to find elsewhere. I don't think that NewEgg carries them though. :(

It's not unaesthetic at all.. The black PSU is mounted atop the black SFF, I may even cut a hole thru the top of the SFF, invert the large fan and let the air blow out... will cause more airflow...

Heres the TTGI version of the same psu. Most Coolmax are rebranded TTGI so i figured you can save you a few bucks...
 
I am running a small Micro-ATX 200w PSU with active PFC external. I bought an ATX cable extender and mounted it outside no problem at all.

My Shuttle was very noicy before with the original internal PSU I couldnt stand the noice late at night when it was quiet in my flat. But with the new external PSU my Shuttle is very quiet, I noticed it immediately. Temps didnt go down. I was running my 80 mm fan slow with speedfan so the old PSU was doing a lot of work keeping my case cool. Replacing it with an external PSU made my case a bit hotter. But I got a 80 to 120 mm fan adapter and a fan running at its slowest setting and now I have lower temps again with much more nice sound.

I definitely recommend an external PSU for your Shuttle. Even if your not a quiet computer geek I think its a good idea if you are running stuff needing lots of power. I have been thinking of running a fanless ATX PSU, I know Zalman have shown a cool looking external fanless PSU.
 
I'm thinking of doing the same thing, let me know how it works out..

i know at the CPL this year antec was showing off one of their new powersupply's which had removable rails on it, that would come in VERY handy doing this.. iono if they're on the market yet though

The work is done. However, since time was a factor, I went to the local Microcenter and picked up an Aspire 500W PSU, which I then mounted on top of the SFF, using reclosable fasteners. Why that you may ask? Portability is a big issue for me, and the 3M strips will come very handy when I will want to move the PSU off the top to... for example fit it in a bag to carry it. Here's two pics off another site that show the power supply:
