Extending wires

The PCI-E cable coming from my PSU is kind of short for my case and I was thinking about taking off the sleeving cutting the wires and soldering in some more wire then of course re-sleeving etc.

Has anybody done this before?

I'm sure there's people out there, and I'm pretty sure there won't be any problems as long as you wire them up correctly. Why not buy some extensions though? It may void your warranty if you do something like that.

Really, the only things to possibly watch out for is how long you lengthen it. If you lengthen it to ridiculously long lengths (like an additional 10 feet), then you might run into problems where the wire overheats and melts due to too much resistance in a wire. If you're lengthening by about 6-12 inches, then it's not something to worry about. But like I said, better to get an extension and not have to worry about voiding your warranty.

Adding 10 feet or even 1,000 feet to a wire isn't going to cause it to overheat and melt.. It will drop the voltage a little at the end though (or completely in the 1,000ft case)..

Well the company I bought the PSU from years ago is no longer in business so I can't exactly get wire extensions... and I don't have money right now to buy a new PSU.

I would probably only be extending the wires by ~2 feet at the most.

Yeah, unless you are really budget restricted, just get some psu cable extentions. NZXT makes some decent extensions. Check amazon (or newegg, but amazon has had a better price lately).

I mean, you could do it yourself.... but why go through all the hassle? Plus the NZXT cables are individually sleeved and look pretty good.

Edit: you don't have to buy extensions from your psu manufacturer.

That's because there's no such thing as a 4-pin PCIe power cable.

Haha, you're right. I'm not sure what I'm thinking of... I remember having an older psu that had a 4 pin something... maybe it was a 2nd cpu connector.

Back in the days before Intel made the EPS standard, CPU power would be supplied by a 4-pin connector. Now, most motherboards use 8-pin connectors, but some lower-end/lower-powered ones still use the 4-pin. Which is why you still see 4+4 pin connections on many power supplies.

PSU connectors are standardized. You don't need an extension from the company that made your PSU; any extension will work fine as long as it is properly-made.

Mine uses only a 4-pin.. although it has the ability to use a 4+4, if the PSU supplies it.
