Extending molex wires?

I want to clean up my wiring and rather than buy super long molexes (4 pin, 16" or the like) I was wondering how hard it would be to just buy wiring and cut it to my desired lenght and to reattach the pins, then slide pins into the molexes?

Anyone done anything like this? I was at Radio Shack and they sell all the wiring but they dont sell the pins. Can I reuse the pins or will I have to solder the wires to the new wires? Is there anywhere that sells the pins?
 
Hold the molex in your hand and cut the wire about 4" up the cable. That way you keep the pins and current wire in tact. Otherwise you'll need to order new pins.
 
Yeah, don't cut the pins off. Not only will you need to buy the pins, but you'll need crimpers, too. Pliers won't work. All they do is crush the connector rather than crimping it.

Do as was said above. Cut the wires somewhere in the middle, add in your extension wire, resolder, heatshrink, and be done with it.

I just got back from Radio Shack. I got everything I need and will be comencing work in 10 mins. If I can find my fathers digital camera I will take some pics along the way. I really have to work on the graphics card wiring, the sata cables, the fans (almost all of them) and random other power connectors.
I am also going to rig up a fan over the memory, should be interesting.

If I dont post back here tonight, look for my thread in the genereal hardware seciton concerning me breaking my computer.
 
Which route are you gonna take? The harder senseless cutting off the molex connectors and reattaching them? Or the cutting the wires and extending the wires?
 
Did the wires (cutting), only had to extend the Video card, getting pics off of digital camera as I type. Post shortly.
 
Okay the pics are for the most part clear but still dont do it justice, but I am tired and will post better photos in the "Rate my Wires" thread.

Here is the thermal paste I had to reapply, I broke this thing all the way down in order to cut that little hole.

I am waiting for it all to settle and I will post back any temp differences. Its the thickness of a piece of tape. And when I finally finished it was factory smooth.

The after pic doesn't do it justice, that curved wire going to the top is really not as pronounced. Its the flash killing it. I will probably end up re-routing that but for now... sleep.
 
First off, it looks great.

Secondly, let me give you one little bit of advice. I notied you cut a hole in the sheetmetal to run your wires, but you didn't protect the wiring from the rough edges. I'd suggest cutting the hole larger, and using some sort of grommet, or something to protect the wiring from those sharp edges. I nice bead of hot glue around the hole BEFORE running the wires through would even help.
 
Those edges are smooth, well as smooth at 18gauge? Aluminum can get. I sanded them down pretty well, and ran my non cut finger across them many times to check. I might do what you say as a precautionary measure anyway.
