This is something that has just occurred this week that's really bugging me. I'm using Windows 7 and periodically for no apparent reason explorer crashes and restarts. After explorer crashes i check up on the error in event viewer and i get an MMC error and asks me to restart my computer.

Code:

and trying to use event viewer after explorer crashes this shows up, which i assume is caused by explorer crashing.

What version are you running -- one of the betas, RC, or RTM?

I have an issue with Explorer crashing on my laptop running the RC after many, many shifts from use to sleep and back. This happens after I've been avoiding slow startup times between classes by using sleep instead of shutting down all day. Generally by the time I get home Explorer is very unstable, particualrly if I try to move or delete files or right click on things like the recycle bin.

I'm hoping this problem will solve itself when I swap to RTM in a few days.

I'm using RTM, i never had any of these errors when i was using the beta releases. It has crashed once or twice while deleting files in my storage drive, although i have sleep off. I'm set in high performance mode.

Welcome to Windows 7.

I first had this issue and thought it was an AHCI problem because I ran Windows 7 RC's and never had this issue, but was using IDE mode. The only thing I changed between RC and release was IDE to AHCI during install. So I reinstalled and did not use AHCI. It still happened again after a couple weeks. I figured this time it was caused by Downloadhelper (ff plug-in), since the crash happened was very first time I used DLH on this install (had it installed the previous 2 crashes also), FF and Explorer.exe went into a crash/restart cycle. I removed DLH and it hasn't happened since, been about 6 weeks. I emailed DLH people and the guy said it's absolutely not his product and that my hard drive is failing. My drive passes WD disk tools smart, disk check and extended disk check.

I have heard that this is related to shell extensions. Can anyone confirm.
For me, it happened to me once while trying to burn a CD. As soon as I put the disc in, explorer.exe went into a looping crash cycle. It happened again while downloading movies in Firefox using DLH to my User/downloads folder.

Well since i posted it at in the early morning i left some stuff out. The first crash on a somewhat fresh windows install happened somewhere between installing firefox and VLC. My father uses the same build as me and the only difference between the two is addons. I've been using Adblock, noscript and better privacy. Going through bugzilla i did find a few instances of explorer crashing giving similar errors as myself. Developers saying its a hardware fault is just taking the easy excuse.

I have also had the same problem, and after removing DLH the problem has been resolved. It also crashed Counter Strike Source, and Photoshop CS4
