explorer.exe crashing when opening an avi or mpeg file in winxp sp2

i read through many forums and found that divx 5.1.1 codec works best w/sp2 when ur explore constantly crashes opening any avi files but with the help of disabling DEP which you do in your boot.ini ... i was very against gettin sp2 but my roomate was like saying how it was so great blah blah and decided to do it and ive been gettin this very annoying problem of eplorer.exe crashing,, but with disabling DEP it didn't crash anymore,, but then they said if u disable dep you can get hacked or something dont' quote me on that.. and was wondering if anyone found a way to prevent explorer from crashing playing divx files or any other files w/out disabling DEP thanks
