Exploding Popsicle Stick Wave

Umm...there's no way that the original energy that the kid put into moving the stick multiplied to the point of raising the stack of sticks that high.

Sorry, I'm not a science type...maybe someone could explain it better.

The sticks were arranged in a way to have a lot of tension, the kid did not add any energy, he released it.

Stored potential energy in the braided sticks?

There is fishing line. You can see it between 15-19 seconds in.

Judging by the amount of popsicle sticks there were, that kid will have diabetes soon.

Pretty awesome, though.

Makes sense as that's how a bow and arrow works. ...but I'd still assume (without any actual data) at the minimal angle that those sticks were bent, it still wouldn't be enough to not only counteract the weight of the sticks in front of it, but to also raise it that high in the air counteracting gravity.

...sounds like a job for MythBusters. ;)

That's totally what I was thinking too. If you tack the line underneath with a light adhesive and then create a guide on the ceiling, it'd create the effect and explain why the sticks jumped up so high.

A contestant on AGT did the same thing this year. It's realz...

hahaha. pretty sure you can buy popsicle sticks with the popsicle already detached. they have a big factory somewhere to de-popsicle them. and yeah, the potential energy in the bent popsicle sticks is converted to kinetic energy. ever seen a line of dominoes or a rube goldberg device? one tiny little action sets off all the stored potential. i wonder how long it took them to set this up? seems like it would be really hard to do and really easy to accidentally set it off prematurely.

This is real.. there is a dude that has done world records on this and is in the Guiness book for this. He did as someone said a ATG or BTG thing too but. I think it didnt work quite right though on his attempt there but he has a website with some that are pretty involved and amazing to watch. Totally NOT fake for those that can not believe it.

Yea bro, that elaborate fishing line and ceiling guide conspiracy theory sure sounds more plausible than bending a bunch of sticks in just the right way.

My 2nd theory was the Nazi antigravity Bell. I figured that the fishing line was more plausible. :D

...after watching some of the videos from the "Kinetic King", I see it's possible with different weaves.

i have two questions

1 how long did that take to setup?

2 how long did it take to clean that up?

ya Kinetic King was great, he made it all the way to the semi finals, too bad one day the sticks somehow got stuck and it was a total failure.

It is not very difficult to set up, the issue is that they have a tendency to go off at the slightest touch.

The government faked it in order to draw the attention of all the best minds in internet physics away from 9/11.

Everyone who was in that video is dead

It's a combination of tension and leverage. If you flick a popsicle stick with the fulcrum at the middle, it probably won't go very far. But it put just close enough near the ends and release it at the other, and it'll fly a foot or so. Add that it's also holding down the next stick which also adds another bit of push as the first is released and you have enough to do the cascade effect.

I wonder how they put it together, it's harder than setting up dominoes.

Yeah, at first I thought it was a dramatic release of tension. But, Haste266 spotted the fishing line. When you look at it, even if you couldn't see fishing line, it looks very much like something being pulled up and then falling apart, rather than something being pushed up as it flies apart.

Watch the video again. He's right on. There's a fishing line woven in the pattern to lift it higher. He wasn't saying that it isn't real, the line is just 'helping it' in order for this video to be anything special.

Watch at 0:48.

Guys.. are you serious about the fishing line? It's not fishing line you are seeing but glints of light off the exploding sticks. It is just tension on the sticks not some elaborate hoax
