Explain what works with Crossfire, please

Ok, so I know x1900XT/X need the master card to work properly(newegg has the mastercard..) but What about the X1800's and such? according to ATi:

A. A complete CrossFire system requires a CrossFire Ready motherboard, a CrossFire Edition graphics card and a compatible standard Radeon (CrossFire Ready) graphics card from the same series, or two CrossFire Ready cards if they are software enabled. This applies to cards from ATI or any of its partners.

Umm.. like the 1800, it says 1800, and then 1800 crossfire edition.. is this talking about a master card? I havn't seen one for sale anywhere..

Explain it to me like I'm really stupid .. something along the lines of: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102624 X2 will work perfectly..

Yeah for a X1800XT or any X1900(except X1900GT) card in Crossfire, first you need a motherboard that supports it.

Then you need 2 cards, one can be a regular card and the other MUST be a mastercard. I havent seen a X1800 master card in a long time, so Ebay is probably your best bet. Then you need that dongle which should come with the master card.

Now if you want a X1800GTO or a X1600XT crossfire, you dont need a mastercard and just 2 of those cards and no dongle. They dont use all of the PCI Express bandwidth.

Ahh cool.. Ya, I have a motherboard that supports Crossfire. ABiT P5WD2-E premium.. Maybe I'll go with the 2 x1800GTO's then.. as the 1900XT's would be almost $1000 :/

Yeah then just get any 2 X1800GTO's then. I think though, they have to be same manufactor. So if you get Sapphire for one card, you have to get the same Sapphire for the other card.

Im debating..

I could start with 1 x1800xt.. and see how that goes then upgrade to a new card when DX10 comes out.. or upgrade to another x1800xt if I feel i need more performance..


bleh.. why can't they just make the cards like in the old days. You had a Low end, medium, and high end card.. nothing like x1800XT/GT/GTO, x1900XT/GT/GTo/GTP/.. blah blah
