Why do people here think power supply brands like Aspire, rosewill, thermaltake, and all the other nice looking power supplys suck? I just ordered a Fortron 350watt PSU because a few people said that aspire sucked, rosewill sucked etc.. I just want to know why. Is it that they don't work? You can't really say that.. I know a few people with aspire PSUs and cases and they say the power supplies work great... So what is the reason that no one here recomends them? (BTW, ordered a thermaltake tsunami, leadtek 6600gt, and fortron 350watt PSU today)

There are soooooo many variables.

First off, let me say that MOST power supplies are best for MOST systems, but far from best for ALL systems. Power supply success/failure is VERY binary. If they work, they work. If they don't.. they fail miserably!!!

Let's break those power supplies down...

Aspire and Rosewill, first... Fine for most. Better than most in their price range, but you run into issues like voltage stability and strength. What that means is voltages can dip and surge very sporatically and this can cause errors or even hardware failure. The lack of strength means that they simply won't hold up to the demands of a Prescott or an AMD64 with a PCI-e card for any length of time. Results include (but are not limited to) lock ups, errors, etc. That brings me to Thermaltake. Thermaltake DOES have GREAT power supplies, but their most popular line is the 480W PurePower. These are only good for power Socket A CPU's AT THE MOST. ALL of their power is on the 5V and none of it is on the 12V. I've blown up two when load testing the 12V rail beyond 20A.... Something that's NOT unreasonable.

It's not that those brands are "crap" per se. Crap would be Deer, Powmax, etc. A power supply that labels itself based on the maximum wattage capability of all rails combined instead of actual power output capability. It's just when people throw out questions like "what's the best power supply for me," the "safe" answer is going to be an FSP or XClio or PCP&C or something that you know has a low failure rate and if almost anything gets thrown at it won't screech the system to a halt.

EDIT: All that said, WHICH Fortron 350W power supply did you order today? There's many different models and a few of them would not be suitable for your Prescott and 6600GT (if it's PCI-e) system. Many have only 16A on the 12V rail.

k that's helpful. My powerlink's voltages have been near perfect for the past 2 years.. And powerlink is a noname brand. It claims it is 400 watts, and I got a bit nervous when I purchased my 350 watt FSP.

I bought the blue 350 watt FSP. And I don't have a prescott, I have a northbridge or w.e it's called. AGP 6600gt.

Cool. Then you're GOLDEN. ;)

Actually, with the dual 15A rails, you'd be golden even if you had a Prescott and PCI-e. :)

you said "nice looking powersupply" . i dont buy power supply because how it looks i buy it for stable voltages and what my motherboard manufacturer recommends. not all power supplys are good not to mention some over state there products. :D

Like Johnny said you can polish a turd....but it is still a turd. You pay more for good quality PSU's. YOu could buy a 5200FX and it would display images but would you use it instead of a 6600GT? Just an analogy and i am sure people will take issue with parts but think about it they both do they same thing right? Does one do it better?

I slightly take offense to that, as I am currently forced to use an fx5200 instead of my beloved 6800OC. I have a thread about the problems I recently have had with my Fortron ax500, whihc is proof that even a good brand like Fortron will have some psus that die after 5 months of hard use, just less than other generic brands.

I almost care enough to ask why....

You took offense? At least it was only slightly. ;)

Hey... ALL BRANDS die. Just, like you said, some more often than others. There hasn't been a PSU yet I haven't seen bite the bullet at least once or twice. :D Think about it... a GOOD RMA rate is 2%. That means one out of 50 people are going to get a lemon. Who's to say it's not going to be you or me? ;)
