explain folding to me?

i've gone through the FAQ, but i don't understand the competitions for folding.
can someone give me a brief explanation?
 
The actual competition is between, individuals, teams, and one's self. The competition is to see who can contribute the most research production. This production is measured in work units (WUs) and points. Most often people discuss their points per day (ppd). People often throw down gauntlets where they challenge other people to a certain production amount be it increasing their ppd by so much or reaching a certain total point value. Some people challenge themselves to get so many ppd or so many computers running with the F@H or UD client.

We also have a long term competition with team OCAU - Overclockers Australia for the number one team in the world.

If that doesn't answer your question please point me in another direction, and I can clarify myself.

Edit: Sometimes also our team has specialized community games, like the [H]ord|Bowl that has their own specialized team created scoring systems, these are created to boost member involvement in the team, and hopefully spur on more overall production(folding). The guidelines and scoring would be discussed and laid out in the respective thread for that game.

 
The underlying idea in all of this is that we all would someday like to see cancer cured. Standford has already published 44 in depth papers with results and new understanding that wouldn't have been able to be gained with out the use of distributed computing. There is another page that explain some of the results, and here is the Current Projects page that discusses the current work units and protein structures that are being studied.

 
While this is a competition on the surface, I think it goes beyond that level for many of us.

Although I dont produce what I've used to, I still keep atleast a machine working. The points are a good measure, but honestly, I'm in it for the science and humanity as a whole.

Several people have added to the moral in their own ways. I had my picture taken watering a PC in a garden, Relic was an excellent motivator along with Gaiden and few other of the old timers through poems and other verbal means. The competition is to stir moral and motivation to produce more units, plain and simple.

not nitpicking, just making sure I understood you: Do you mean morale instead of moral?
 
In case you *really* dotn know what folding is - sinse you just asked what software we use - you can find everything that you want to know at the Folding@Home website.

Beyond that, in terms of measuring production and such.. in-depth stats of everyone's production numbers are kept at http://www.hardfolding.com/ - we generally go by these stats to compare production amongst different members and such for competitions.

All the info you need about the two projects we as a team support. :)

and the points and stuff are mearly there to help keep things exciting, cuz otherwise there wouldnt be that big of a draw to fold. But with a point structure, it helps encourage people to go ask friends and family to help out to and you sometimes can win some cool stuff ;)

have you started folding? did you download the client from stanford?

always download a new client from stanford for each machine (or CPU for the dual CPU).

Have we answered your questions?

After running the stanford folding software... give your user name to the program, as well as your team # ---- and your team # should be 33, since that is the number for our team here at hard OCP.

That's for sure. I just lost my father in law on 9/11 to Melanoma (skin cancer that spread throughout his body). I had 8 CPUs running beforehand; but this gives me additional motivation to get another dual core machine.
