Expired Windows XP CD Key?

My motherboard took a dive on me 3 weeks ago so I sent it to newegg RMA service and got a replacement. When I turned my computer back on Windows notified me that my hardware had changed too much and I'd need to reactivate my copy of Windows XP.

Okay, I've done this before. I punch in the key and it tells me my key is expired and has been reactivated too many times. Now I'm alittle angry, granted I've upgraded parts of my eMachines before. I've replaced the motherboard, added video and sound cards, and more RAM. But the harddrive and CPU are the same.

So deal is, I fess up $200 to MS to get a refreshed CD Key, or I get my copy of Windows XP deactivated in 1 and a half days and counting. Speedy responses appreciated.

I do have access to another copy of Windows XP, but I'm worried that if I put it in and install it over my current, I'll lose all of my data. Is there anyway I can make use of this other Windows XP copy?

Thanks in advance. I really don't want to get mugged for $200 by M$.

I just sold a copy of XP Pro to a guy on ANANDTECH and he had the same problem.. he called MS and they fixed the problem.. as per teh user agreement, you pay 200$ to be able to use the software for 12 years.. you could also assume your key has been keygenned and was spread on Kazaa/Emule/Limewire whatever.. call MS, they should fix it..

Were you prompted to call Microsoft for Product Activation? If so, why did you not call them?

Dude! You dont need to buy anything, and theres a legal way out of this.

Call up MS, tell them that you reformatted your computer. (Act like you dont know much about computers, it works with the rep) Then just tell them that the key doesnt work anymore because you've reformatted that computer more than once. They should give you a new key.

This worked for me last year, when the same thing happend to me...I reinstalled windows and the rep generated a new key for me.

I've tried calling several times. The toll free number is constantly busy. When I call the toll number it beeps and a recorded voice says "Invalid Pager" and then theres just silence. I guess I'll keep trying the toll free.

Erm.. you must not be calling the right number, what number are you dialing?

I'm pretty sure the number you call for that is a Washington state area code and is not a toll free call. I had to do that after I reformatted my wife's laptop too many times. Just say that you reinstalled due to a really bad driver problem...they should be helpful about it.

I've reactivated twice and both times were completely hassle free. I called the number, instantly had someone on the line who asked me a single question aside from wanting the information on my screen, then gave me an activation code. It's pretty painless.

Just tell them you installed new parts

the only thing they ask is:

"Do you currently have this copy of windows installed on more then one computer"
(more or less)

"No."

then you are golden...

ive done this like 5 times at least now :p

Isn't it amazing how many people bitch and complain about a simple process? I've had to call in quite a few times for friends and I don't think I've been on the phone longer than 5 minutes.
