just started folding, I expected my 5850 to do much better than it has so far, looking at around 4K PPD or less, my CPU is showing around 12K PPD using the SMP client. is this about right? ran together, I only hit about 8K, so looks like running SMP alone is the best bet.

You are best off not folding on the GPU altogether, and setting your CPU to fold -bigadv units once you've qualified for the early completion bonus (by successfully completing and submitting ten SMP units before their preferred deadlines).

As said above, it just isn't worth folding on ATI cards at this point in time as things are really borked. We just don't have anything decent yet and cpu utilization is also through the roof which will hurt your CPU client's production. If you download the V7 GUI based client, you can get the newer GPU3 ATI units which produce around 7000-7500ppd on a 5850, but again it is just better to fold bigadv with your cpu once you've qualified for the bonus by folding 10 regular SMP units within the bonus deadline. If you havn't done so, you'll also need to sign up for a passkey :)

Thats assuming the OP's i7 is overclocked, if its stock the OP is best off running SMP, otherwise unless the OC is above 3.6GHz with moderate usage BigAdv will be close to the deadline i believe (correct if I'm wrong)

Even a stock 870 should be plenty. The maximum TPF to make the preferred deadline is about 57 minutes, and even a stock i7 quad should fall in well below that.
