I'm running out of space in my Norco 4224 have 24 HHDs installed but I do have 3 or 4 drives still Blank in FlexRaid and another blank outside the case just in case of a disk failure. I have a few options I was going over.
A. I can start swapping old 1.5TB/2TB (currently have 8-1.5TB and 9-2 TB) disk for 4TB HDDs
B. I can start deleting data when I need more room which I do at times.
C. I add on with another server case only storing disk no MB/CPU
The correct answer for me is All of the above. How do I go about adding on another case. The best would be either get another Norco 4224 or build my own when it becomes that time, but for starters I will just reuse a old computer tower til I need more room that it hold which shouldn't be for 1+ yrs depending if HDDs die and get replaced for 4TBs some of those 1.5TB/2TBs are 4+ yrs and could crap out anytime. I just see no need to replace them til they finally fry.
From what I can tell I would need Case,PSU, and most likely another Chenbro SAS Expander if I plan on upgrading to that 2nd Norco 4224 in the future. And then a SFF-8088 cable running from Expander A to Expander B. Am I missing anything. Would there be a cheaper solution than buying a 2nd Chenbro SAS Expander by using some sort of SAS/SATA Port multiplier not PCIe though since the 2nd case won't have a MB.
Lastly I know my FlexRaid is pretty slow mostly because of those 1.5TB/2TB drives are WD Green's. Would I benefit at all by replacing my HBA Supermicro - AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 to a Raid Controller would that speeds things up at all. Just was wondering what kind of a performance boost I would see if any if I did. I know during my last Parity Build I maxed at only 18 MB/s and slowly dropped out each %. If so any suggestions ?
I do plan on either upgrading my main rig i7-920 or the Server with the i3-530 and dropping the i7 setup in the server or get Broadwell or Skylake CPU when released for either the server or main rig.
