So we just went live on Exchange 2k3 and had a 3rd party do all the work. Well we cant go by with one day where we dont have email down when we come in for the morning. Is there a way to have the system auto-restart the smtp service automatically....or even figure out why it goes down in the first place?

Any help would be awesome.

Anything in event viewer? Also, turn on Exchange logging until you have a handle on the problem

Auto-restaring SMTP service is an ugly band-aid fix

Get that 3rd party you paid to get in there and fix it...you paid them to set it up correctly. Oh and shoulder surf while they fix it to get a little more hands on experience. :p

Yeah we need to get them in here. Right now the users are going to start grabbing pitchforks and torches. Do I turn on exchange logging in the exchange system manager? Im a bit new to Exchange and dont know where all that is yet.

Procedure
To enable SMTP logging and log the files to a shared disk
1.
In Exchange System Manager, in the console tree, expand Servers, and then expand the server on which you want to enable IIS logging for SMTP.

2.
In the console tree, expand Protocols, and then expand SMTP.

3.
In the console tree, right-click Default SMTP Virtual Server, and then click Properties.

4.
In the Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties dialog box, on the General tab, click Enable logging, and then click Properties.

5.
In the Extended Logging Properties dialog box, on the General Properties tab, in Log file directory, change the SMTP log file location to a folder on a shared disk.

6.
Click OK two times.
