Hi.
I am using Office 2010 on Windows 8.1
When trying to open an .xlsx file today it produced an error message "Excel unable to read file"

The file was ceated in Excel 2007 which is also the version that now won't open it. Has anyone else come across this?

Sounds like the file got corrupted somehow. You could try using Open/Libre/Office and see if that will open it, save it with a new name, then see if Excel can open that.

File might be corrupted. Or may have been created in Libre and the file extension just renamed.
Also, go into Options > Advanced > Be sure "Ignore other applications that use DDE" (ad verbatim) is unchecked.

What about right-clicking on the file name and select Previous Versions tab? I had to do that once on a Word file that was corrupted.

Went to XLSTART folder and deleted the temp file which was open from a previous session with 0 bytes. After file deleted, restarted Excel and issue gone.
