Excel files not opening, only opens excell

On my work laptop every time I open an excel file it only opens the program, and not the file. I went in the registry and added %1 but it semi worked. i get an error, but then it does open. Any other way to fix this? I tried to do it through file types but I don't get the advanced button, just restore, and restore just removes the association.
