Exceedingly Hot XP 2000+

I salvaged an old comp for my parents the other day that had an AMD XP 2000+ at 1.66GHz and a biostar MB on it. I slapped in a radeon 9550, a new HDD, and some PQI RAM. Everything was running fine until I checked the temp and it was at 170F.

I took apart the HSF and cleaned it, then added some AS5. Still no go, it slowly rises back up in the 160s. Is the 2000+ just naturally really hot or what? Is there some software I can use to underclock it down to something less heat producing?

Most people with stock HSF's only get those to like 140* F . HSF. Don't worry till it closes on 180. The Palomino's just run hotter. If it scares you that much get a decent copper HSF.
 
What i'd guess is a bad thermal sensor since even that old 2000+ would start erroring out before hitting 160F+. If it were truelly that hot the heatsink would be very warm too unless it's on wrong.
 
75C is a little bit hot for a Palomino, but not all that dangerous yet. Just don't expect it to overclock far, and keep an eye on dust buildup- even a little bit could do a lot of damage when you're already that high.

What's the climate like by you?

Above poster may be right, you should invest $30 in a Zalman something-or-other, or an SP-97.
 
You might also want to try to improve the airflow through the case. Make sure you have some decent fans and that the wiring's clean enough not to get in the way.
 
Ok I went out and bought a Thermaltake Slim Volcano 8 and stuck it on there. Now it hovers around 125F. A lot better. I guess im just used to my overclocked P4 3.2 running at 107 in the same room, so anything over 140 scares me. I'll keep an eye on it and such form now on, but I'm pretty sure 125-130 is aceptable. $15 can make a BIG difference I guess
