EVO Shift... Why?

I'm looking at the info on the new EVO Shift and asking myself "Why would someone get this instead of the Epic?" It's got a slower Processor, lower Resolution Screen (and non-AMOLED screen) and likely most of the EVO's battery issues...

Am I missing something here?
 
Well... A better Android experience (touchwiz blows). Better build quality (Samsung blows). A more normal screen (SAMOLED gets really annoying after a while). A better supported device (The G2/Desire Z/EVO Shift community has quite a following). A Smaller device (The Epic is awkward).

Take your pic really. Also, at 800mhz, the Shift is actually faster than the Epic. OH, and it's the same resolution screen.
 
Entropism more or less summed it up. If I'm not mistaken the Evo Shift has a newer processor that is actually faster.

If you aren't rooting and using a custom ROM, the Epic is a poor choice. I say that as an Epic user who tried very hard to stay stock while rooted. Wasn't going to happen with all the laziness on Samsung's part to address real issues with the phone. If you want a solid phone with keyboard that you will most likely keep stock, the Evo Shift is the winner.

Touchwiz btw is a joke and a half. Right after finding a better browser the first thing I did was replace Touchwiz with Launcherpro. Then I realized, hey, wait, I'm on Android. What does XDA have to offer for my phone? I'm now running ViperROM, though I'm eyeing Midnight_ROM as my new one. I just can't get over how awesome ViperPad is and don't want to lose it.

Eh, like Samurai I wouldnt consider touchwiz. I dont see the point of running a UI atop a UI and personally would put a pure AOSP rom like Cyanogen on it

Not used AMOLED screen, I assumed the hype about it being so much better was true. Other than the sliding keyboard being a little loose I didnt notice any physical build issues on the demo model I played with and I assumed it was abused a lot more than a typical phone would be since it's just a demo and people "dont care" since it's not theirs.

Epic is running a 1ghz process, so it's 200mhz faster.

Does the keyboard make it awkward? I've had no real problems with size on my EVO and it's roughly the same as the Epic (only reason I didn't go with epic was I wasn't a fan of the keyboard's build but it was my preference, not the mechanical parts)

EDIT:
does it have the same battery life problem (<8 hours stock) that the original EVO does?

A 3.6Ghz P4 is running 500 Mhz faster than a Core i7, so that must be faster too...

As for my SAMOLED comment being "the most retarded comment of the year", SAMOLED is an unnatural, overly saturated, mess of a screen that looks great for a few weeks, and then the pentile display (for text) and the oversaturation (for everything else) gets annoying quickly. So other than saying how retarded my comment is, how about ponying up and saying WHY you feel that way.
 
Well I hardly consider the screen oversaturated but that is always a matter of taste or and much less bad for text but at least you now offer your point of view instead of a gets annoying remark.
 
Talk about SAMOLED all you want. Perhaps I got the golden screen, but the colors on mine are absolutely perfect. No blue tint, and definitely not oversaturated.

I do have to say my friends has a slight blue tint though....

I am with you, pretty much everyone raves about that screen including me and I am very picky with my image as my heavily calibrated projector at 6500k and ffdshow endless processing for accurate color will tell you. :D
The blue tint can be changed with some kernels that has the voodoo fix if yours has it.
 
The Shift is in fact as fast as the epic, if not faster in some cases. This is a bit dated and not a true comparison, but the G2 I believe has the same cpu/gpu as in the shift and as you can see it's a decent match.

It's also more pocketable. There are many like myself as well that love HTC Sense. I've been using Sense for years now and have come to rely on many of its integrated features. I think the epic has a better keyboard though. I have Touchwiz on my Galaxy Tab and it annoys the hell out of me how it tries to look like the iPhone.
 
LOL! Some of the crap coming out of entropism is hilarious! SAMOLED is far superior in every way to all that is EVO... yet you sit here and dream up this complaint that it gets annoying after a while? My Epic's screen is bright, crisp, clear and the colors are phenomenal. I've got the brightness down to 15% and it's brighter than the EVO at 100%. It sounds to me like you're just pulling excuses out of your backside.

I must be getting old. I like the larger screen of the EVO (even if it is the same resolution - still not large enough to look blocky) In fact I wouldnt have minded if they'd added another 0.5" to the display...

Ugh... sense... though i will agree it's better than touchwiz, it adds a lot of extra bloat to the system. I was suprised to see how much of a performance improvement I got when I went to cyanogen mod (Pure AOSP). Though I do LOVE the Sense Keyboard...

BTW: how is the Tab size-wise? I looked at it for a tablet and felt like it would be too small to do much on (just like a phone screen, I hate reading books on my EVO, I still do it when I'm bored but I get some bad eyestrain from it or else have to scroll constantly)
 
It's small enough to fit in your pocket, but not so small that you always have to zoom in and pan around like a smartphone. So basically, the perfect size. :D The things that I've taken for granted in Sense are too numerous to count, I started with it and have been very surprised at how less intuitive the stock Android is (though it's great on it's own). For example can't type someones name out on the keyboard and have it pull up their contact. I always use that and never realized it was a Sense thing. Going to a contact page it has every text/email/reference type thing just for that contact. When adding/removing names from email/text To: lines you have to actually type in commas to separate them, etc. Basically for me it's a lot of things that add up and I've never seen any noticeable performance degradation. I mean when it's fast enough that you are totally happy, it's hard to improve on that. :p

Seriously, have you never seen the SAMOLED displays on the Galaxy S line? The blacks are incredible, of course (perfect, even), but pentile needs to die in a fire. Trying to read text on it is incredibly annoying, and I honestly breathe a sigh of relief going from my Nexus S to my original Droid as the Droid's screen is just so much better, much sharper, no screen door effect, higher DPI, etc.. Now, if they put out a SAMOLED screen that isn't pentile (and a DPI bump wouldn't hurt), that would have all the makings of an excellent screen. The current batch of SAMOLED isn't there yet, though.
 
Looks like there are some possible issues with the shift:
* very low speaker volume
* gps not getting lock / taking too long to lock
* poor reception
* bad keyboard causing the screen to scroll randomly (apparently fixed by getting a new unit)

It's frustrating that there's still no all-around decent phone with a keyboard for android.
 
I dislike the Sense UI tbh, the touchwiz is nice but does lack in a few areas. Thus we have LauncherPro so this argument really isn't warranted. Aside from that my Epic has a beautiful camera, lovely screen and excellent video capture. It's a light phone yet with a big screen, hardly any bulk on it unless you wear skinnies. I love my keyboard and I love the processing power of this phone, I can play N64oid games with ease. My only complaint is no proper bluetooth HID support so I can't use my Wiimote :(

I know three people with the Shift, all bought at the same time. For what it's worth two of them have never mentioned any of those. I can however say my wife has had a few reception issues, but then again we are actually living in a narrow strip of reduced Sprint service so it's kind of explainable. What are the odds. :p Her GPS locks just fine though, I wouldn't call it slow at all.

You can install a different bluetooth stack to get wiiMote support. Though I dont know how to do it (Cyanogen comes with a stack that supports it, so I never bothered to look it up) but even with full support some of the buttons dont work (L+R iirc)

The main reason I got it was it was smaller. It is faster phone as it has a next gen processor. Also like others stated it is an htc so there is a bigger scene for them. There are already great roms and kernels out. Low voltage 1.5ghz OCs etc.

But honestly get what you want and not what us internet people tell you. Both are good phones and the phone that makes you happy is the phone you should get.
 
I gave my fiance my old Evo and bought an Epic last November. I LOVE this thing. I loved the Evo too though. My Epic is rooted with SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0.1 and a few other random themes/things I've flashed but forgotten about. I love it though... super snappy, works great, and very nice battery life.

I have to say though, I don't understand the SAMOLED comment either. I love the screen on this. In fact, whenever I use my fiance's Evo (generally to fix it lol) the screen looks terrible in comparison. I thought it was great before I got the Epic, but to me the AMOLED (or whatever) looks much nicer. I'm a big fan of the black pixels.
 
I'm not sure what comparisons these people are making, but it must be of the Evo and the Evo Shift when they say it's comparable or faster.
I've used all three (Evo and Evo Shift only for a couple days each) and the Epic is quicker at just doing normal operations as well as running 3d games smoother.
I used the Evo w/ CM6 and the Shift with an overclocked kernel. I can say that I i don't personally like Sense UI or touchwiz, which is why I use launcher pro.
I, like others here, have not had any problems with the SAMOLED. If you have the phone inches from your face, then maybe you'll see a difference with pentile.
I do, however, notice the difference with the between it and the dull HTC displays.
For those who mention hardware quality...really? Samsung is known for better quality hardware and middling software support. It's HTC that's known for poor hardware quality. Don't take my word for it, search around.
If you're going to be rooting and flashing custom ROMs, you can't go wrong with the Epic. Sure it had a slower start with ROM development, but with Cyanogenmod 7 coming along well for the Epic, and the Samsung Galaxy S platform being the first non-nexus phones to get official Gingerbread, if you're not going to move into the next generation of Android hardware platforms, why would you think that with all things being equal (Gingerbread-based ROMS) on the software side that inferior hardware (Let's face it, the Hummingbird is the premier single-core SOC for phones) would be a better choice?
Epic has easily been on par with and bested Evo and Evo Shift since it got custom Froyo ROMS. It can only get better.
Just my $.02 and yes, a bit biased opinion (everyone has some bias)
