EVGA's step up program?

I'm gonna hold out until they offer the superclocked version. Hopefully they will in the next 76 days. Maybe something else will come out better by then.

EVGA does not usually offer overclocked cards for stepup, per the stepup terms stating that evga wil offer only EGS reference clocked cards for stepup. Its wise to wait until later to see what else comes out, but know that the price you see on the EVGA site will NOT go down or up and will stay the same for the most part while other e-tailer's go down.

I too made an uniformed purchase last week and bought 2 8800 gts 640mb cards. I am interested in the step up but I don't really know what to get. I'm open to opinions also.

Thanks,
Ryan

To be fair, 2x 8800 GTS 640mb is nothing to shake a stick at!

Would 2x 8800 GT be cheaper? Well, sure, probably. Perform better? In some situations, sure (not all, of course - the memory bandwidth on the 8800GTS is remarkable).

Realistically, though, the performance difference between the two models is rather trivial. By the time a game comes out that 2x 8800GTS cannot handle...well, 2x 8800GT are not going to be any better off!

So would I be better of stepping up to to a gtx or am I just wasting my money?

Thanks,
Ryan

If it was only a week ago, return the cards and buy two 8800GTs (unless eVGA will refund the difference when you step-up, I don't know how that works), it's not like you're stuck with the purchase (yet). And the GTX isn't really worth it when an overclocked 8800GT can surpass it.

I cannot return them to newegg. I should go with 2 8800gt's? I'm not really into overclocking, I need stability in my system.

Thanks,
Ryan

Don't bother IMHO, you'll lose money if you downgrade (more like sidegrade) to 2xGT's, since in the step-up you have to pay MSRP (of new minus what you paid), and there's not much chance of the SSCs being released (at least soon)....And NO refund of $$ overages, doesn't work that way, otherwise they'd probably being losing their shirts w/ all the people going GTS320/640/some GTX -> GT right now.

IMHO, keep the cards, maybe NVIDIAs refresh to GTS/GTX will come sooner than 90 days --- *then* consider using the step-up program.

Agreed, hold the rumors to be true and sometime before the end of the year we might be seeing the 8800GT's big brother; there would be a time to step up.
