I'm looking into buying a new gpu, a gtx 260, 275 or 285... But I'm torn between which t get. Ii have heard great things about evga, is this just because of their excellent customer service and available step-up program? Which card manufacturer is really the best and why? Which card should I get?

BFG by a longshot. Great customer service, a bullshit free lifetime warranty, they warrant all of their models all the way down to their entry level cards, and they have been great here on the forums.

Eh... BFG mailed me a 7800GTX replacement for my 7800GTX, which was cool except for the newer revision/model had full fan 100% of the time. They ended up replacing it for me with an 8600GTS which wasn't quite equal but did not suffer from the fan issue, this was before the 8800GT existed, and if it had I'm sure they'd have given me one of those.

I bought an XFX 8800GT through the [H] deal and had great service for the purchasing part but never had to call upon them for warranty support so I can't speak for it.

But now I've got an EVGA card so go figure. I've been around the block here, and have only had to call upon BFG for their warranty support but the that 7800GTX was old so no complaints there, they honored the warranty just as was advertised and worked with me for a solution but couldn't explain why the new cards were full-on-fan-horrible.

EVGA's card did come with a nice software bundle, and so did the XFX card, but the BFG card was rather lacking in that department.

It's just a matter of which of the above 3 come in at the lowest price point for the requirements you have, they're all great companies with good presence on these forums and bend over backward to keep their users happy.

Is there any difference in performance between BFG and eVGA cards? Disregarding customer service and warrenty

I always go eVGA for my board/gpu but honestly you'd be fine with either of the big three nvidia partners.

Thanks for all your help guys... I'm thinking an evga or bfg gtx 275 or 280, now I just have to keep an eye out for the lowest price over the next few weeks

I've always bought EVGA cards, and never had any issues. XFX, EVGA, or BFG would all be good choices, but I would stay away from PNY.

Sounds like you came out on top. 8600gts > 7800gtx but a pretty good margin. Either way, you could have come out worse. They could have sent you a 8600gt :)

I have been very happy with BFG. After a bad run in with EVGA I started buying BFG for all my customer's builds. I have had to rma 2 cards so far and its been a really good experience.

I've had a great experience with XFX when my card died. They were quick to respond to my problem.

Can't say the same with EVGA. I bought a 8800GTX from them due the glowing responses from [H] about their customer service but when my 8800GTX died they were the worst company I've ever had to deal with.

As for BFG, I still have a BFG 5200 Ultra AGP seated in an old computer that won't die so they seem like a quality company.

NO BFG!! I read that you cant take off the heatsink or you will void warranty.

:D-------XFX or EVGA----:D

3 of my last 4 eVGA cards (9800GTX and two GTX 295) have failed within 45 days so I'm done with them.

My XFX GTX 285 SLI setup runs like a dream.

XFX!!

Well all reference cards are made by the same people, so end user support is all that one should be concerned about. From that I'd have to say eVGA but I have no experience with XFX or BFG however I've heard both are good.

between evga/xfx/bfg I usually go with the one that has the best free game included ;)

also bfg usually costs more than evga/xfx

BFG, excellent support.
Just bought 250 and 260, both good and price too.
BUT if you nned to modify your card like change your heatsink fan, than you must goto EVGA or XFX.

EVGA, XFX, and BFG are all great. But not equal, they have variations in the warranty they offer that set them apart. None of them would always be the right choice for every buyer.

You have to look close to make sure you get the one that's right for you.

Having dealt with XFX's support when they first came out, my call was routed to outsourced tech support in India. I was denied a rebate that was clearly valid and within the time frame. This cost me around 30-40 bucks. I haven't bought an XFX product since. I also didn't like their unprofessional marketing low-blow at eVGA: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20070515121920.html

XFX also had a short TV show called Extreme PC Garage. Very cheesy.

Hopefully they have grown up and become more professional now that they are a big name in the graphics card market. I still won't buy anything from them (unless I personally see some sort of above and beyond redeeming service from them). Screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me.

eVGA has won my business and even when I posted negative things on their website about one particular model of card: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=385528&mpage=1&key=
my thread was not filtered or locked.........that shows true class. Actually, looking at it now, they did filter some of the threads......the ones that made personal attacks on me.

This was the card in question: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16814130357

Heh, that's funny. I think the sad part is that what EVGA took them to court for is using their trademarked logo. It makes me think of the IE/Firefox cakes - a playful jab at the other team. EVGA comes off a bit like whiny tattlers here. "They said mean things about us!!!!111" Just my first impression of the situation...

I've had a few XFX cards, and now have an EVGA. My XFX 9800GT is still in my PC as the secondary card. The 8600GT I sold along with my old system to a friend. My cousin bought my AGP 7600GS when I upgraded my system to PCIe. All are still working great, so I can't tell you how XFX's tech support is. I've heard they're not the best, but I have no first-hand experience. I do know that the people who bought my old cards now have a lifetime warranty on them, which can't be said for any other brand.

My main card is an EVGA GTX285. I've had no problems with it so far (7 months), but the rebate did get screwed up due to the vendor subbing a better card for the one I ordered, without updating the invoice. I contacted EVGA ahead of time to get everything straightened out, and it was still denied when I sent it in (along with the whole email conversation we had). They fixed it after I contacted them, but it just seems like a whole lot of work for something that should've been pretty simple.

I also dislike EVGA's warranty options. Apparently you can only pick (and pay for) their different RMA options at the time you register the card. I was in a hurry and just wanted to get my product in their system before I lost easy access to the serial number. I just closed the window and didn't choose anything once it was registered, so now I apparently can't buy their upgraded RMA service if I need it. Personally, I'd much rather pay an extra $10-$20 for faster service per incident if I really need it rushed, than buy a $40 upgrade package (which I may never even use) when I register the item. It really seems to me like just another way for EVGA to take more of your money that shouldn't ever actually be needed (assuming their products are actually good and don't need to be RMAed).

Something to keep in mind

BFG Offers an RMA depot in Canada to eliminate the shipping BS(customs, brokerage etc) on Stepup and RMA's

XFX offers a transferable warranty

EVGA offers neither

best price/game is something to look at too
