EVGA Fan Not Changing

Hey guys, hoping someone might know what to do about this. I got a EVGA 260 50nm a few days ago and I've been playing around with EVGA Precision and Rivatuner trying to get the fan to adjust lower. Unfortunately no matter which program I use, on auto or manual, setting different thresholds, starting at start up or manual run, nothing adjusts the fan.

I'm running XP 32bit using the latest Geforce drivers and Precision from EVGA's website. The RPM on GPU-Z reads around 2900 RPM +- 100.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Ok, a little more information.

From what I can gather the 2900 RPM is about 95% of full fan speed, so basically my fan is stuck on high speed.

I'm running GeForce 182.50 and Precision 1.7.1. At idle the GPU is reporting 39-40'C but my ambient is relatively high in the room. Opening the side panel only drops the temp by a degree if at all, case is a P182 with 4 120mm fans pumping around 60 CFM each. I even ran FurMark and got 73'C stable for over an hour. I also used ntune to try to change settings but to no avail.

Is it possible the mobo BIOS is setting this? I have a Gigabyte P35c-DS3r but I've never seen anything which could do it in any of the menus.

I'm very confused at this point. I've used ATi for years because the first Nvidia card I bought burnt out after about 30 minutes in my first computer and this isn't exactly making me too confident in Nvidia again. There's a chance I'm just doing something stupid, but I also think this could be a hardware issue...

Hmm sorry to hear about that mate. I have 2 285s and man they cant control their fan speeds worth crap. I have been using rivatuner to bump them up to 70% of their fan speed when gaming and the remaining times they run at their normal stock 40% fan speed setting.

I would think that it could be your BIOS overriding rivatuner's settings...or it could be that may be you are not using rivatuner properly?

I'm a bit of a process nazi and I have noticed that when I disabled the startup applications (the ones that load the tray icon) on nvidia cards the fans run at full tilt. It sounds like you are probably way ahead of me though - I've never played with rivatuner and have no experience with anything newer than an 8800GT.

I wonder if that could be it. As far as I know the drivers from nvidia control the fan speeds though the latest drivers that seems to be broken hence my usage of rivatuner as a last resort...I would recommend not being too much of a process nazi :) and see if that solves your issue and my hunch is yes...

After a complete reinstall of drivers after cleaning with driver cleaner, removing rivatuner/ntune/percision, and even removing the heatsink to repaste the GPU and check the fan leads -- it still is running at 100%. Albeit now FurMark tops out around 64'C which is nice, about a 10'C reduction from switching thermal paste. I also installed Windows 7 on a separate partition and again I had no control over the settings.

I think the thing I'm finding is that the drivers don't seem to ever work, as 40% fan should be default but it's setting itself to 100% as default which it shouldn't do unless either REALLY hot or faulty, the latter being my suspicion.

I'm going to try the card in another computer but if it still idles at 40% I'm just going to have to assume it's a faulty card and I'll RMA it.

Anyone else have any ideas before I do anything drastic (opposed to losing my hearing...)

You may have a faulty fan, fan wire or fan controller on the card.
It sounds as though there is no speed feedback from the fan and thus it is ramped as high as possible.
Not simple to find what the actual cause is but its worth getting in touch with EVGA over this, may be RMA time.
