I have been playing with my new 8400
Motherboard: evga 680i SLI
ram: xms2 pc6400
psu: pc and power cooling 750w
vid 8800gtx

I've gotten it to 4ghz at 1.40v 49c load
and
3.6ghz 1.35v

I did orthos/prime95 for about 30hrs with no problems, but its randomly doing a hard freeze, sometimes it reboots sometimes it doesnt. I have automatic reboot turned off in windows. I just had it do it while i was surfing the web, hotmail.com specifically. I've had it do it while it was running overnight doing F@H. It seems to be 100% random and its always a hard freeze, no staggering right before it, it does nothing to lead me to believe its about to crash.

I've just turned off all voltage changes and frequency changes, i'm running stock to see if it still does it.

Note: it rarely happens, somewhere between 0 and 8 days
Any ideas?

How long have you had the 680i? Also what are your NB temps under load?

Look into reseating the heatsinks on your 680i voltage regulators. They use shitty thermal tape, the heatsinks themselves aren't flat and some boards shipped without them making contact with the regulators at all. You end up with high temps and flakey performance. Worth a look I think.

680i was purchased on 11/06, which means its the first rev/ver (got it right when it came out)

Running Latest bios

______________

For the voltage regulators, which do I need to reseat?

Only the one circled in green or the one to the left of the cpu also?

______________

After updating the bios and installing the e8400 my temp program no longer works. Can you point me in the right direction for that?

Downloaded speedfan for atleast some temps

Edit: ran some configs from speedfan's site

_____________

Using: Stock NB+SB HSF
Scythe Ninja for CPU w/ 120mm scythe fan
High airflow case, 120mm fan intake, cpu and exaust for a total of 3. Antec superblower (or something like that) slot cooler.

like most 680i's, your board has now driven itself to instability. RMA.

I would say that your NB has slowly baked itself to death. It may not be dead yet but soon it will be.

Dan_D would be the one to ask about this issue as he has had alot of 680i failures. He could surely tell you the early signs of failure.

My 680i went catastrophic on the hottest day of the year, never to show a post code again and I had no signs of instability

It sounds like a new mobo is in order, and I've actually paid for the EAR thing already anyways.

So what should I do with the new board? New HSF for nb/sb? reseat the voltage regulators? after market HS for voltage regs?

I would redue the NB/SB TIM for sure on a new 680i before you start it up.

As far as the voltage regulators I am not sure there is an aftermarket alternative. You can not use AS 5 on them and if i remember right the heatsink does not cover 2 of the mosfets anyway.

I just noticed your sig says 8800 GTX. Is that sli? Do you plan on sli? If no to both then I would take your lumps and save for an Intel chipset.

They seem to be very stable and that e8400 would possibly oc to 500+ fsb if you so desired.

The one circled in green has the nasty tape, that one for sure. Evga forums advise to do both. I've got an AR board as well and I'm about to RMA that sucka if I still can even though I'm in the queue for a 780i upgrade.

nope, until sli is flawless i'll never bother with it.

evga doesnt sell intel chipsets. With taxes around the corner and my 42in screen going bad (under warranty getting it replaced, but im gonna spend a bit more for a really nice one) i wont be dropping another 150-250 on a mobo when i have one that i can get replaced for free :p
