eVGA 6800 GT Overclock

I'm running my system (amd 3500/1gig corsair XMS 3200 )at 1:1 228 HTT, everything stable, no probs. When I try to overclock my eVGA 6800GT the highest I can go is 380/1060. Whenever I raise the mem or core 1 more point all of my benchmarks like pause for 5 secs and thus all of the scores are messed up. I'm not sure if that's what happens when you overclock your card too far (I'm a 1st time OC'er). However everyone seems to have a much better time OC'n their boards, maybe I just have a bad OC'ing one? However, when it detects the optimal settings it goes up to 400/1100. Like I said though, anything above 380/1060 stutters in benchmarks. I also tried raising the AGP voltage b/c I figured that might help, but it didn't. Is there anything else I can do to OC it more? BTW I don't even know if you're supposed to raise the volts to the AGP I just tried it regardless.
 
get a nv5 siliencer and then raise ur voltage to 1.4 and u can probably get 400/1.1 stable..
 
I guess you got a bad overclocking board. I can overclock my 6800 GT from its stock speeds to 415 Mhz core/ 1.15 Ghz Memory and run/pass all benchmarks with no problems. If I overclock it to even 420 Mhz then my card stutters/freezes in benchmarks. It once froze for like 5-7 seconds and just when I was about to reboot- it started up again. However, in the end i got a score lower than usual.

Did you install the drivers correctly (cleaning the remains of all old ones especially if you were switching from a ATI? that could do something with how well your card overclocks.

Otherwise, i guess you have a bad overclocker.

Lol, you dont need to get a nv5 siliencer and raise your voltage to 1.4 to get 400/1.1. Most GTs can do that and more just with reference settings and cooling. You should be able to hit 400/1.1 w/o all of that work. Mine at least can and I read others can too. Most people get a nv5 siliencer and raise the voltage to 1.4 in order to hit like 450-460 Mhz core or Ultra Extreme speeds.
 
What kinda PSU you using? that could be a cause of instability though its more on the lower end of possibilities, but alas, a chance is a chance.
 
I have a similar related problem now. I have a copper HS and get 48C idle 67c load after 20 minutes of rhdribl with my card at 410/1100. My card auto detects at 415/1120 so I used to run it at 410/1100 24/7 until I noticed little black flickers on the main female character in HL2, I forgot her name :eek:

I clocked down to 400/1100 and the flickers went away in HL2 but then I got black flickers in the water in EQ2 so I had to eventually go back to stock and work my way up from there and settled finally on 385/1100 without noticing anymore flickers.

I have changed the volts in my default bios before (evga 5.40.xx.xx.xx.01 or the like) and with my 2d set to 1.1v and 3d set to 1.4v I get an auto detect of 442/1190 or something insane but read that with 2d voltages that low it could mess up the card. When I upped the 2D to 1.3v with 3d at 1.4v my auto detect is only 408/1100 or something pathetic, anything higher fails the internal testing.

As you can see I've messed around with this quite a bit and I'm not really sure what I should do. My core temps are good but I'm worried about having my 2d at 1.1v with 3d so high . If I up the 2d voltage my oc is worse than stock. Anyone have some knowledgeable advice?
 
The only problem with having a lower 2d voltage is that the ram does not clock back under 2d like the core. So you will be running 350/1100+ or whatever in 2d, and then you're at 400+/1100+ in 3d. Anyway, 1.1v can cause some instability with ram that high in 2d in rare cases, so the only reason to raise the 2d voltage is if you have problems.

Secondly, don't go off the autodetect. Raising and lowering your speeds based on in-game artifacts is the only way to really determine what's up. My autodetect is only like 420/1050, but I can run at 435/1200 all day long without a problem.
 
Well fxxx it, I went ahead and upped 3d to 1.4v and the flashes are now gone in in EQ2 @ 410/1100. Auto detect is at 438/1170 so I tried EQ2 @ 420/1100 for the hell of it and got the flashes right away. I know when some more system heavy games like EQ 2 come out people like me who thogut their overclock was fine are going to notice little black flickers in the corner of their eyes. I really doubt I'm the only one with a duff card :p.
 
410/1100 is far from a "duff" card, heh. If that is in a closed case with mostly stock (aside from copper insert I'm assuming) cooling, that's pretty damn good. My card is in an open case with watercooling and a whole lot of airflow over the ram.
 
Besides the wattage of the PSU, what is the amp rating for the 12V rail? If it is less than 18 amps, it is not a very good PSU. I would look for at least 20 amps on the rail. If you need a new PSU, step up and get one with around 30 amps plus.

I would expect at least 400 out of the core on the GT. The last eVGA 6800 GT I had did 465/1140 for benching with the 1.4V BIOS change and an NV Silenver 5. The stock GT cooler is a little lackluster for overclocking.
