EVGA 680 - something is up..

I bought an 680 SO Sig+ from a member a week ago. The card ran just fine - no problems at all. I decided yup to try out an accelero turbo plus ii on it, so I threw it on. Notice I have installed and uninstalled many, many arctic cooler gpu heatsinks over the years. I am very meticulous about making sure everything goes right.

Anyways, I found that it didn't help out the temps very much-mostly because of my case- so I decided to take it off. Everything had been r running just fine. I cleaned everything, and put the original heatsink and shroud back on. I go to plug everything back in and when I turn on the comp, the fan turns up to 100%and stays there and there is no display output at all. Clearing the cmos and Updating the bios doesn't help.

I threw in my wife's gtx 460 and everything boots up just fine. I put the 680 in her comp, and the same error occurs. I took the heatsink back off and inspected everything and it all looks totally fine. Put everything back together, still the same problem.

Any ideas? Thanks guys!
 
Accelero coolers are very unforgiving and sometimes bend the pcb when tighten too much. You probably over tighten it and broke some pcb traces.
 
The reason they bend the PCB is because they don't have a backplate like most other heatsinks yes? I installed it using the EVGA backplate, which should have distributed the force equally everywhere near the screws - so ideally that isn't what happened.

In that case though, I guess the next best thing would be to bake the card and hope that it solders those connections back? - like hell i would do it, but just a thought lol.
 
I think the backplate only helps the bending over a mass area so it doesn't appear bent when mounted in the case. I'm sure the cooler puts 50lb+ of pressure on one specific area then there are at least minimal bending not visible to the eye. I'm no EE student but I recall someone accidentally breaking one of those parts near the gpu center called "ceramic smd capacitors" that are easily cracked and broken off and still not be visible to the eye.

I doubt they broke any pcb traces. They're usually pretty secure. If there were any cold solder joints under the BGA, they may have broke though. You can test this by putting pressure on the BGA and see if anything changes. Usually the corners are the first to fail. BE VERY CAREFUL THOUGH, YOU DON'T WANT THE CARD MOVING IN THE PCI SLOT! You could try re-flowing the BGA's in a last effort before giving up on it. There are multiple ways of doing this at home. Using a oven or hot air gun.

haha I wish. I submitted a ticket on EVGA - they are just saying to send the card in.

With the new EVGA warranty you can RMA a card you bought used. So sending it to them would probably be the best idea.
 
They are actually asking for an invoice - if you don't have one they will not accept the RMA.

I thought that it was all serial number based, so that wouldn't matter..? I was able to work it out, but this is definitely strange.

From EVGA's site:

•All products purchased ON or AFTER July 1st, 2011 include a 3 year limited warranty from the date of purchase to the original owner with a valid invoice. For original owners without a valid invoice and users that have not purchased the product from an authorized reseller, the warranty begins from the date the product was shipped from EVGA's warehouse. Registration is recommended.
 
I was able to work it out, no problems - but you are right that I shouldn't need one.
 
Oh my god phishster, I just got your PM and then found this thread. WTF is going on?

Inspect the PCB - everything. Give less reason for EVGA to deny your RMA. I've read countless times, granted by other companies like ASUS, where PCB arrived damaged(despite leavings owners house in acceptable condition) on a card and RMA gets denied. I see you have pursued RMA already, just make sure you package that baby good before sending it in. And please take care!!!

I went as far as printing out a pic of [H]'s review for the gtx 680 and compared it, transistor for transistor, to what was on my desk. Everything seems fine. I will take it apart once more and do one more thorough cleaning before I send it back, JUST in case lol. I am probably going to send it back completely wrapped in bubble wrap lol.
 
Why would you rma something you broke and is no fault of evga? The card didnt fail on its own, it failed when you broke something modding it.

Hopefully this gets denied.
 
You said the GPU fan is spinning, have you felt the heatsink to see if it's getting warm at all? If voltage is going through the GPU and there is still no display then it sounds like static damage to the GPU itself or something in the PCB.

If traces were broken somewhere near the GPU it shouldn't be generating much if any heat. Highly dependent on what traces though...

Better put it in an anti static bag, before wrapping it in static inducing bubble wrap.
