This happens as soon as I log into the world in WoW and has happened while playing Darksiders and Witcher 2. It just started happening this weekend. I have been running this setup for 2 years about and have not changed or tweaked any settings other than install/uninstall software, driver updates, windows updates. My temps are 40-45c idle/deskop usage and around 55-65c under load according to speedfan. I am thinking that the issue is the video cards ram? I know artifacts can appear due to other issues but this seems pretty extreme.

recap:
Same setup for 2 years
No major software/hardware change
Good temps
Only seems to happen during 3D games and within 30 seconds

Specs:
Asus Rampage Formula
Intel E8600 3.4ghz c2d
EVGA 280GTX - 650/1400/1050 (stock or whatever evga precision set it to)
G.Skill 4gb DDR2
Power and Cooling 600w

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love the community here and would love any help I could get.

use hwmonitor to check temps. ive found speedtemp to be quite unreliable.

also check the gpu for dust accumulation.

but yeah your pic looks like some serious artifacting. could be that your card is dying but it could also be overheating.

if your registered your card with EVGA you should have a lifetime warranty so if all else fails you can RMA it.

Just used hwmonitor and it says it's at 50c idle, which seems to be fine as far as I know, Unfortunately I didn't register my card way back when so i'm SoL there. If I do have to replace the card, what would be a good replacement? I don't think they sell 280s anywhere anymore.

load temps are what matters... it could be getting to 100c when you play WoW so you need elimate overheating as a culprit before you move on to other issues.

Continue further down the list until the problem is solved:

Reinstall/update drivers
Clean dust out of heatsink
Reduce clock speeds (ram and core)
Try card in another computer
RMA the card (if possible)
Bake the card in the oven (if RMA not possible)
Buy a new card

is there any program that will log temps and save it even on a hard restart? because as soon as I load the game it happens, no way I can see the temps.

I just had the same exact problem with my evga 280.Your card is gone.RMA if you can.I couldn't because I got mine used.I baked it and it worked good for two weeks, then same thing.

If the system isn't fully locked then you should be able to alt+f4 and return to desktop. I will agree with the above posters to RMA it.

well I took it apart and cleaned it out and still no go. So I just ordered a 560 to replace it, I didn't have my 280 registered (yea i know i'm stupid) so hopefully this fixes the issues! Thanks for the help guys. You all rock.

I just took an evga 280 out of my rig for an upgrade. Hit me up if you're interested.

I have this problem with my EVGA GTX 280 as well. I noticed it started when I updated to the latest driver off of EVGA's website. mine flickers when playing BC2 at high resolution and goes away when set at low or medium. I think the card is dying and I will contact EVGA about his issue.
