Ever noticed higher GPU clocks actually decrease performance after a certain point?

Just curious how it manages to perform lower even when the clocks are not fluctuating or throttling. I can go back and check sensor tabs with gpu-z and whatever and the clock history never changed from the selected boost clock. I guess there are aspects of video cards you just can monitor?
 
Are you asking because you're experiencing this? Are you using something like afterburner that can log the change of the clock speed over time? I've found GPU-Z sometimes only reports the highest but does't actually fluctuate based on if the card is actually changing it's clock speed. Same goes with some benchmarks like the Unigine Heaven demo...that displays the top clock speed of my card but does not reflect the fluctuation of the actual clock speed.

It almost sounds like, if you're experiencing this, your card is hitting a thermal limit and throttling despite what your applications are telling you.

EDIT: Nvm, I just read where you mentioned GPU-Z's graph not showing fluctuations. Try a different app.

lol yea im asking because im experiencing it.......i do think gpuz does report fluctuations but you have to hold the mouse pointer on the graph to read it.....you can EASILY see all the other readouts fluctuate. I can double check the afterburner graphs and see if its the same as gpu-z. the only thing im changing with afterburner is gpu voltage which does indeed work and allow higher clocks....aside from that i use the build in overdrive, not that it matters really. (they both read the same thing)

My initial thought was maybe its some kind of hard coded TDP threshold from the bios. In other words once it reaches a certain TDP power draw it trys to throttle the actual gpu usage? Maybe i would show up under current? Only way around it would be to increase the power limit in the bios under? looking at the bios in the editor it shows it at 204. (before any changes with power limit i guess?)

Ill double check but im relatively sure the actual boost is not dropping from what i set
 
Are you sure that you're not getting VRM errors? You could be over-volting your memory.

Im leaving the memory alone, primarily so that wouldn't happen. (not that i knew it would)

Apparently I just needed to reboot windows cause what ever caused the lower benchmark scores is scoring the way i figure it should. Maybe i was misreading the graph after all? One thing i can say if your testing new clock speeds and it ever fails 3dmark or whatever...........................I have to reboot windows for it to Not throttle? Seems to be the case on mine anyway. JUST NEEDED A REBOOT

I was just fucking around to see what if any gain increasing voltage with afterburner had. IT did give me a solid 50mhz more than i would without the extra gpu voltage. I had about 8500 before and I scored 8 724 in Fire Strike after....So that mystery is over and i think this card is scoring appropriately.

Glad you figured it out. I had seen a post or two on OCN which blamed memory erroring out due to high voltage.

I had run into same thing one time before with the memory and i been reluctant to bother with it since lol
