Like the title says, has anyone converted an external DVD-RW drive to an internal before? What should i expect? I currently have a Plextor? Am i better off leaving it the way it is or does it really matter performance wise.

I have a good old, LD CD-RW drive right now. Would it be possible to make the PLextor an internal and then using the external case from that for to convert the internal LG into an external??

External drives are almost always an IDE drive with an adaptor card behind it to give you USB or Firewire ports (or both).

Just take the drive out of it's case and you'll see it's just like any other IDE device.

yup, what he said ^^^^

I got in on that 200GB external hd deal a couple weeks ago...got two, only wanted one external, so i undid the four screws, popped out the drive, and popped it into my comp!

plextor is mega nice too, plus when you go internal you get a speed boost (that 200GB was limited to ~20MB/sec external usb2, internal ide was about ~90MB/sec.

This can be the oddest question you will ever hear but is there any possibility that an IDE drive can be infected with virus????

I think i might just convert it, but do you think the internal CDRW which i will turn into an external (via the Plextor's external casing) would work??

if the plextor that comes out of it is ide, and the cdrw is ide, then yes, it will work. make sure you set the jumper (master/slave) as the plextor is set.

and also, no, i dont think a cd/dvd drive can be infected with a virus. someone correct me if im wrong....but im pretty sure (99%) its not possible.
