Well I was reinstalling XP, and during the install the power went out, so I'm not sure if this is the cause, or not but I think it messed up the drive.

Now I'm seeing a Event ID 51, saying:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

Looks like the drive might be bad?

I would do a full (long) format off the WIndows XP install cd and go from there.
 
I did reinstall XP, samething. I have a WD Raptor and I grabbed the Lifeguard tools and ran the Quick test and Extended test and there where no errors, so the only thing to do is the 1s & 0s for a low level format.

With those first two tests showing nothing I get the feeling the motherboard got zapped during the power outage, but I have the darn thing on a nice APC surge protector.

I'm thinking I'll swap out the SATA cables, reflash the BIOS and then do a low level format and if I still have the problem and the low level format doesn't show errors I guess the board crapped on me then.

P.S. You think then possibly all it needs is a lowlevel format?
 
In my experience if a low level format doesn't fix it, it's toast. Yeah I would try it before I fired up all that other stuff.
 
Does your drive support NCQ? I read an article where disabling it helped solve a event ID 51 problem.

Microsofts website has some articles on it too.

I had a look and it was enabled, but I thought I turned it off, because I always make sure that it is, I guess I forgot this time when I reinstalled XP.

I don't see the message right now, oh MAN I sure hope this was the problem, I just built this box in Dec. and all I have been doign is fiddling with issues, I have not hardly enjoyed it since I owned it, and now this.

I sure hope this did it, I've been really bummed.

I had a similar problem with my Hitachi NCQ drive on my Ultra-D. The issue is with the NF4 driver, although it doesn't aversely affect performance, just throws arbitrary fits in the event viewer. I don't think you have a hardware problem.
 
Yes I reinstalled and reformatted my C: drive, all though I have a D: partition, not sure that this would of been effected too, but I didn't touch that.

As far as that MS Event ID 51 URL all I can make of it, is to just check with the vendor to see if there are any issues with the hardware in question.

As I mentioned I shut the NCQ and I have not seen this issue in the past 30mins, which I would of typically seen it already a few times, so far it's looking good.

Yes I was, but then in the Computer Management I was seeing these errors, after I reinstalled. I also had NCQ enabled on the HDD, when typically I always turn it off, but forget this time, thinking this power outage was the issue, also, plus the fact I had diskeeper installed before playing with, thinking possibly the combination had mucked it up.

But 3 hours later after turning off the NCQ I have not seen the message again, so far looks like it was the ticket.

Someone I know had this error (it appeared as though this was causing the system to freeze)

He sent it to me, but I could not reproduce the problem. I low level formatted, installed all drivers and did more stability tests. Everything was fine so I just sent it back to him.

I think he said it still freezes/BSODs, but I am not sure.

All I know is it wasn't a problem with the hardware, since it worked fine when I was testing it (computer was on for 3-4 days straight running tests constantly).

I wouldn't doubt it if it was just a case of PEBKAC for that guy.. :rolleyes:
 
i remember that ching... because my computer was doing the freezing thing too. i just bought a new harddrive and it hasn't happened since.
