Ethernet Cable Question

Again, you can't think in the now. You have to think to the future.

I have 15mbit cable, that actually provides me around 27mbit/sec (I'm not asking questions) and may go to 30 or 50mbit FIOS this year.

Just talk to all the business that ran 10mbit cabling 10 years ago... And see what they are paying to get that all replaced.

I wasn't saying he shouldn't get cat5e, I was just saying it's plenty, and therefore he doesn't need cat6. NOBODY should run cat5, I wasn't saying that.

Anyway, what do you pay for that kind of internet connection? Where do you live?

I don't care for a wall jack, I just want the cable coming into the room. Will patch cable be fine to wire across my house and into a room without any drawbacks?

Hmm well I've done some more research and patch cable just seems to be a name for the cable and not a specific kind.

I'd like some more info on shielded and unshielded cable. Is UTP and STP related to this?

Cool :)

Northern Virginia. Cox Cable. $58 a month or thereabouts.

If you get CAT6 you won't have to worry about all this. CAT6 is all shielded as far as I know.

Nice 50 ft pre-made CAT6 patch cables are around $8 a pop on Newegg. I just bought a bunch of them.

UTP Cat6 is not sheilded.

STP Cat 6 is.

You average joe will be buying UTP.

Ya, and I want to know if UTP is the way to go for me.

Will getting STP sacrifice any of the performance?

STP cable is shielded and will protect from RF interferance. Don't bother with it. Just get UTP. STP costs a bunch more too.

Okay I think I'm going to go with UTP. Will all the offices out there and stuff that use UTP without problems, I don't think it will be a problem for me.... just as long as a few other cables won't really hurt the performance.

How far away should UTP cable be kept from other cables? When do you start to notice interference?

It depends on what cable you get it near. Another network cable won't cause any harm. A power cable would, so keep it at least 6 inches from those if you can.

Running parallel to power cables, try for 12" or more if you can. If you need to cross power cable, do it at a right angle. At right angles, you can have them as close you need to. And really, if you have to run next for a power cable for a foot or two, it's not going to make a difference. Just don't run the cable the entire length of the house right alongside a line voltage cable. :)

Thanks for the clarification. That must be some damned thick wire in there then :)

A lot (all?) of the earlier CAT6 cables cables have a plastic seperator in them that seperates the pairs more. My cable had this (it looked like a plastic cross), and it did add quite a bit of bulk to the cable. Made it a pain to work with, too.
