Ethereum mining - reducing stale shares.

Hey Guys,

I've only been mining for a week but have basically taken my 2 gaming boxes & some older video cards (& made a third box) to do ethereum mining.

As I added more & more video cards my stale shares are increasing.

Here is my setup:

Windows 7 + 1070 x 2 (stock clocks).
Running geth/genoil

Ubuntu Linux 17.04 with GTX 680 (4GB) & R9-290 (4GB)
Ubuntu Linux 17.04 with GTX 1060.

I'm using genoil (0.11 IIRC). Each box is running it's own copy of geth to sync the blockchain (I'm doing --syncmode "light")

My current stale rate is close to 25%..

With only 3 GPUs you should probably be mining in a pool. Your chance of hitting a block is pretty slim.

Actually I forgot to mention -- I'm in the ethermine pool

I have 5 gpus.... 1070x2, 680, R9-290, and 1060.

If you're in a pool, then there's no point in having geth running. The pool interfaces with the block, so you don't have to.

I just set my 1070's to use this new build of ethminer:

And they're cruising. Maybe give that a try?

I don't know enough about stale shares to offer any more than that. Sorry.

I thought you needed geth to snag the blockchain? All the setups I've seen point ethminer (what I'm using) at a copy of geth listening on localhost:8545 (IIRC).

Edit: Well in the last 2 hours I"ve gone from something like 10 blocks stale & 48MH effective rate to 0/120....

so...not sure what is going on...?

You have no need of a wallet/geth if you are pool mining.

Follow the pool instructions to connect, and that is it.

You do. But you don't need the blockchain to mine in a pool. The pool operator interfaces with the blockchain for everyone in the pool. When you mine in a pool, all your miner needs to do is crank away at jobs as they come down from the pool operator.
